Trump-Scott alliance could speed Lake Okeechobee dike repairs

Florida Gov. Rick Scott and President Donald Trump want to accelerate repairs to the Lake Okeechobee dike named for former President Herbert Hoover.

President Donald Trump wants to accelerate repairs to the Herbert Hoover Dike around Lake Okeechobee — a top priority of his friend, Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

Scott wants the dike project completed by 2022 rather than 2025. The White House issued a statement Thursday saying Trump had “instructed the Director of the Office of Management and Budget Mick Mulvaney to accelerate the completion of repairs.”

The White House statement doesn’t specify a completion date or attach a specific dollar figure to the pledge, but says the administration will work closely with Scott to expedite work.

Scott, one of the first elected officials to support Trump in 2016, has touted the president as a “partner” in Lake Okeechobee efforts. Trump has publicly urged Scott, who faces term limits next year, to run for U.S. Senate against Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson.
