COUNTDOWN TO INAUGURATION DAY (Jan. 20, 2017): 2 DAYS
President-elect Trump’s Twitter war on civil rights icon and lawmaker John Lewis continues as more Democrats say they will boycott Friday’s swearing-in ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.
South Florida congressman Alcee Hastings said he will boycott the inauguration along with roughly 50 other congressional members. But other local Democrats, including U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel of West Palm Beach and Ted Deutch of Boca Raton, and Republicans say they will attend.
Trump again tweeted critical comments of Lewis, this time challenging claims that Lewis’ boycott this year is unprecdented. Trump tweeted: John Lewis said about my inauguration, “It will be the first one that I’ve missed.” WRONG (or lie)! He boycotted Bush 43 also because he…”thought it would be hypocritical to attend Bush’s swearing-in….he doesn’t believe Bush is the true elected president.” Sound familiar!
For his part, Lewis did not back off his belief that Trump is “not a legitimate president” and added that it would be “almost impossible” for him to work with the 45th president.
Confirmation hearings resume today. Wilbur Ross (Secretary of Commerce), Scott Pruitt (Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency), Nikki R. Haley (United Nations representative) and Tom Price (Secretary of Health and Human Services) are scheduled to appear.
Price will get the most attention owing to reports of a questionable stock trade.
