COUNTDOWN TO INAUGURATION DAY (Jan. 20, 2017): 14 DAYS
President-elect Donald Trump spent an hour Thursday testifying in a deposition — a rarity for a president or a president-elect. The legal action stems from Trump suing a chef who backed out of a deal to open a Spanish-themed eatery at a Trump hotel. The business deal fell apart in the summer of 2015 after Chef Jose Andres took offense at comments Trump made about Mexicans. According to AP, “Andres said at the time that Trump’s statements disparaging immigrants ‘”make it impossible for my company and I to move forward.”‘
Trump and GOP lawmakers continued to ramp up the rhetoric on the “repeal and replacement” of Obamacare. Trump also made headlines when he criticized Toyota for expanding in Mexico. Trump tweeted the company could expect to be hit with a “big border tax” if they didn’t build in the U.S. Trump wasn’t faring well among the Chinese, either. An unflattering commentary on Trump published by China’s official news agency read, in part, that “tweeting has become a habit for Mr. Trump” and “the obsession with ‘Twitter diplomacy’ is undesirable.”
Other news: There are rumors swirling that Trump will tap Dan Coates as the Director of National Intelligence. Coats served a six-year term in the Senate and was also a U.S. ambassador to Germany under President George W. Bush.
On Friday, Trump is scheduled to meet with long-time “enemy” Graydon Carter. Carter, the editor of Vanity Fair, had a falling out with Trump in the late ’80s when he called Trump a “short-fingered vulgarian” in the press.
