TALLAHASSEE — All 29 of Florida’s electoral votes were officially cast for Donald Trump this afternoon in a brief proceeding in the state Capitol.
More than 100 demonstrators chanted “Love trumps hate” and “I believe that we will win” outside the Senate chamber, hoping to persuade electors to break their oaths and vote for someone other than Trump.
Part-time Palm Beacher Trump carried Florida on his way to winning 306 electoral votes on Nov. 8 — exceeding the 270 needed to win the presidency. But Trump opponents have been pressuring Republican electors to break away in hopes of denying him the White House. The effort never had much of a chance in Florida, where electors were picked by the state GOP and vetted by the Trump campaign.
The vote itself was over in about 15 minutes. Electors then spent about 30 minutes signing multiple copies of official documents certifying the state’s vote.
