COUNTDOWN TO INAUGURATION DAY (Jan. 20, 2017): 32 DAYS
Today, the 2016 presidential election results became final. Despite planned protests in some state capitals and though Republican electors saying they have been deluged with emails, phone calls and letters urging them not to support Donald Trump, the part-time Palm Beach resident formally took his place as the next President of the United States, winning the Electoral College 304-227.
In related news, Florida’s 29 Electoral College members are scheduled to meet this afternoon in Tallahassee and give all 29 votes to Trump.
Trump has picked Vincent Viola, a West Point graduate and the owner of the Florida Panthers NHL team, as his secretary of the Army. Trump, at Mar-a-Lago for the holidays, is expected to have more meetings today as he fills out his administration.
Last night, President-Elect Trump met with several reporters for about a half-hour at Mar-a-Lago for an off-the-record session. Trump’s wife, Melania, was also present for what two reporters called a “relaxed” session. Trump has not held a formal news conference for more than four months.
Republican Sen. John McCain has taken a stance at odds with both the Trump administration and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell over government reports of Russian interference in the November election, saying it threatens to “destroy democracy.”
