COUNTDOWN TO INAUGURATION DAY (Jan. 20, 2017): 38 DAYS

LATEST NEWS

President-elect Trump has filled a major administration roster spot. He has announced that, indeed, he will nominate Exxon Mobile chief Rex Tillerson as U.S. Secretary of State. But opposition is already lining up.

The Tillerson announcement ends weeks of speculation about the key diplomatic post, which had been sought a team of rivals, including Mitt Romney. Team Trump is also expected to name former Texas Gov. Rick Perry as Energy Secretary.

In addition, the transition team announced that Goldman Sachs’ Gary Cohn will serve as director of the National Economic Council. And they made their plans to nominate retired Gen. John Kelly for Homeland Security official. Another interview of note: Carly Fiorina, a GOP primary rival and former Hewlett-Packard CEO, has met with Trump.

Wisconsin and Pennsylvania certified the Nov. 8 voting results giving Trump wins in those formerly blue states, even as calls for investigation of Russian attempts to hack into election processes or influence election results continued to swirl. Trump called for critics to move on, but calls for a probe came from three key U.S. senators, too, including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as well as John McCain and Lindsey Graham.
