Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Kaine said Friday that “Florida is checkmate” in the battle for the White House and if he and Hillary Clinton carry the state, she’ll be elected Nov. 8.

“We’ve got to win Florida, if we win Florida, it’s over,” Kaine told several hundred students during an event on the Florida State University campus.

Buses were on hand to bring students to downtown polling places at the end of the first week of early voting in the state.

President Obama also hit a state college campus Friday, appearing at Orlando’s University of Central Florida in support of the Democratic ticket.

Kaine said he was pleased with polling in the nation’s largest swing state, which shows the Democratic ticket narrowly leading Republican Donald Trump and running mate Mike Pence.

But Kaine warned, “We can’t take anything for granted….it’s been a season of surprises.”
