CLEVELAND — Gift bags handed out Sunday to Florida’s Republican National Convention delegates included “Make Florida Red Again” hats – a play on Donald Trump’s signature piece of campaign apparel and a reminder of the state’s familiar role as the key to GOP White House hopes.
The Florida hats are also a reminder of the conflict between Trump and some traditional GOP policy stances.
While Republicans have generally supported free trade, Trump has criticized “the false song of globalism” and pledged tougher international trade deals. The delegation hats have a Trumpian slogan on the outside and a “Made In China” label on the inside.
Part-time Palm Beach resident Trump’s candidacy has divided Republicans. But political conventions are hothouses for partisan optimism, and the delegates from America’s largest swing state hope this week’s gathering will mend GOP rifts and broaden Trump’s appeal in Florida, which Democrat Barack Obama narrowly won in 2008 and 2012.
