Beruff looks to make “The Hug” hurt Rubio, like “The Hug” hurt Crist

It may not pack the same punch as the iconic Charlie Crist-hugging-Barack Obama-photo of 2009, but longshot Republican Carlos Beruff is now using a pic of a Crist-Marco Rubio embrace against his U.S. Senate primary opponent.

The campaign titled its Friday release of the photo, The Hug, obviously hoping to elicit from GOP primary voters a reaction similar to that depicted in Edvard Munch’s, The Scream.

In a press release, the Beruff campaign tries to affirm a bond between Rubio during his 2006-08 run as House speaker and Crist, who was then Florida’s Republican governor.

The two were testy rivals, but did share some policy agreements that led to the state borrowing more, raising college tuition and unsuccessfully advancing efforts to give illegal immigrants a route to citizenship.

“The comparisons to Charlie Crist shouldn’t be all that surprising,” Beruff’s campaign concludes. “After all, for years, Marco Rubio has hugged Charlie Crist’s agenda.”

Of course, not mentioned in the release was Beruff’s own support for Crist. The Manatee County developer was appointed to three different boards by then-Gov. Crist and also contributed $11,000 to his 2006 governor’s race campaign and $4,800 to his U.S. Senate bid in 2009, just about the time he was hugging Obama.
