Secret Service fail? Donald Trump says reporter ‘grabbed me by the arm at least twice’

Though he was protected by Secret Service agents as he left a March 8 news conference and election-night victory celebration at his Trump National golf club in Jupiter, Donald Trump said this morning on NBC’s Today show that former Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields “grabbed” him twice before Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski “brushed” her away.

Donald Trump on Tuesday noted "touching" by reporter Michelle Fields; today he accused her of grabbing him twice.

Jupiter Police on Tuesday charged Lewandowski with misdemeanor battery for the incident.

Trump has forcefully defended Lewandowski since the charges were filed while ratcheting up his attacks on Fields.

“She grabbed me by the arm at least twice screaming questions…She grabbed me by the arm twice. I pushed her off. You could see that very clearly,” Trump told NBC’s Savannah Guthrie and Matt Lauer.

Guthrie and Lauer asked Trump about Lewandowski’s initial claim, on Twitter, that “I never touched her.”

“Would you acknowledge that Corey Lewandowski did not tell the truth initially about this incident?” Guthrie asked.

Trump initially didn’t answer, but when pressed again by Lauer, he said that Lewandowski’s contact with Fields was “so minor that he might not have even thought about it…he brushed her to get, probably, probably to get her hand off my arm. So it was so minor he might not have even realized it took place.”

Trump rejected the suggestion that the situation might not have escalated if Lewandowski or the Trump campaign had apologized to Fields.

“I think she would have pressed charges anyway because I think she likes it. That’s my opinion. Maybe I’m wrong,” Trump said. “If he said he was sorry I think she would have used that against him.”
